.454 Casull is one of the most powerful revolver cartridges you can buy, built for hunting big game and protection in bear country. It drives heavy .45 caliber bullets at high velocity, and a .454 revolver can also fire milder .45 Colt for practice. At Gunners Outlet we carry .454 Casull ammunition in heavy 300 grain hunting loads from Hornady and Federal. Order online and we ship fast from our New Hampshire warehouse. About .454 Casull Ammunition
Dick Casull and Jack Fulmer developed the .454 Casull in the 1950s by lengthening the .45 Colt case and loading it to very high pressure. Freedom Arms brought it to market in 1983, and it has been a choice of serious handgun hunters ever since.
Most .454 Casull loads use 250 to 300 grain bullets, with 300 grain bonded soft points and jacketed hollow points being the standard for elk, moose and bear. These heavy bullets penetrate deeply and hold together on large animals.
Recoil is severe, so practice is important. Because the .454 shares its rim and diameter with .45 Colt, you can train with .45 Colt and switch to full-power .454 for the hunt. Always confirm your revolver is chambered for .454 Casull before firing it, since .45 Colt guns cannot handle its pressure.
Revolvers and Rifles in .454 Casull
Popular .454 Casull revolvers include the Freedom Arms Model 83, Ruger Super Redhawk and Taurus Raging Bull, and some lever-action rifles are chambered for it as well. From a rifle barrel, the cartridge gains velocity and reach.
Because .454 ammo is costly and recoil is heavy, many owners do most of their practice with .45 Colt.
