About .243 Winchester Ammunition

Winchester introduced the .243 Winchester in 1955 by necking down the .308 Winchester case to hold a 6mm bullet. It became one of the most popular hunting cartridges in America almost overnight.

Light 55 to 75 grain bullets are built for varmints and predators, shooting very flat at high velocity. 90 to 100 grain soft points are the right choice for deer, offering controlled expansion and enough penetration for clean kills.

Recoil is mild, so new hunters can shoot it accurately. The key is matching the bullet to the game: varmint bullets fragment quickly and are not suitable for deer. For deer season, choose a 95 to 100 grain soft point and confirm your zero before you hunt.

Popular .243 rifles include the Remington 700, Ruger American, Savage Axis and Winchester Model 70. Its light recoil makes it one of the best first deer rifles for young and new hunters.
