About .17 HMR Ammunition
Hornady introduced the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire in 2002 by necking down the .22 WMR case to hold a .17 caliber bullet. The result is one of the most accurate and flattest-shooting rimfire cartridges available.
Most .17 HMR loads use 17 or 20 grain bullets. Polymer-tipped varmint bullets expand rapidly for clean kills on small pests, while some full metal jacket loads are designed to limit pelt damage on furbearers.
The tradeoff is that .17 HMR ammo costs more than .22 LR and the light bullets can drift in wind. For targets beyond 100 yards, though, its flat trajectory makes hits much easier. If your rifle likes a particular load, buying it in a 500 round box saves money.
