Federal American Eagle Indoor Range Training 45 ACP Brass TMJ 230 Grain 50 Rounds

FMJ ammo is the standard for range practice and training. A full metal jacket bullet feeds reliably, keeps barrels cleaner and offers the lowest price per round in most calibers. At Gunners Outlet we carry FMJ ammunition in 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .223, 5.56, .308, .380 ACP and more, from Federal, Prvi Partizan, Remington, Winchester and PMC. Order online and we ship fast from our New Hampshire warehouse. Each product lists its price per round, so comparing value is simple.
What Is FMJ Ammo?
A full metal jacket bullet has a soft lead core covered by a harder copper or copper-alloy shell. The rounded or pointed nose feeds smoothly in semi-autos and rifles, and the jacket reduces lead fouling in the barrel.
FMJ does not expand like a hollow point, so it penetrates more and transfers energy less efficiently. That makes it the right choice for practice, training and target shooting, but not ideal for self defense or hunting, where expanding bullets are safer and more effective.
Military ball ammo such as 5.56 M193 and 7.62x51 M80 uses FMJ bullets. For high-volume shooting, buying FMJ in bulk is the easiest way to save.
FMJ Variations
Not all FMJ looks the same. Round nose FMJ is the classic pistol shape, flat-nose FMJ (sometimes called FMJ-FN or TC) is common in .40 S&W and 10mm, and FMJ boat tail (FMJBT) rifle bullets have a tapered base for better long-range flight. Total metal jacket (TMJ) bullets fully cover the base too, reducing lead exposure at indoor ranges.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is fmj ammo used for?
FMJ ammo is used mainly for target practice, training and plinking, because it feeds reliably and costs less than hollow points.
Is fmj good for self defense?
FMJ is not ideal for self defense because it does not expand and can over-penetrate. A quality hollow point is the better choice.
Green tip 5.56 vs fmj: which is better?
Green tip M855 adds a steel penetrator for better penetration of hard targets, while standard FMJ is cheaper and often more accurate. For range practice, standard FMJ is fine.
What does fmj stand for?
FMJ stands for full metal jacket, a bullet with a lead core covered by a copper shell.
