About 5.45x39 Ammunition
The Soviet Union adopted the 5.45x39mm in 1974 with the AK-74 rifle, replacing 7.62x39 as its main infantry cartridge. It fires a small, light bullet at high velocity, giving it a flat trajectory and very mild recoil.
Most 5.45x39 ammo uses 53 to 60 grain FMJ bullets in steel cases, primarily from Russian factories. Because new imports of Russian-made ammunition have been restricted since 2021, supply depends on existing stock and other manufacturers.
If you own an AK-74 or a 5.45 AR upper, keeping a supply on hand is wise. When you find it, buying in quantity protects you from future shortages.
