About 9mm Makarov Ammunition
The 9x18mm Makarov was adopted by the Soviet Union in 1951 along with the Makarov PM pistol. It became the standard sidearm round of the Warsaw Pact, and many surplus pistols from that era are still shot in the U.S. today.
Most 9mm Makarov loads use 94 to 95 grain bullets. FMJ is the common choice for practice, and hollow points are available for defense. Power falls between .380 ACP and 9mm Luger.
Despite the name, 9mm Makarov is not interchangeable with 9mm Luger. It uses a shorter 18mm case and a slightly wider bullet, so always match the ammo to the marking on your pistol.
Popular 9mm Makarov pistols include the Makarov PM, the East German Pistole M and the Bulgarian Makarov, all known for reliability. Modern options like the Polish P-64 also use the cartridge.

Frequently Asked Questions
9mm makarov vs 9mm luger: which is better?
9mm Luger is more powerful and far more common, while 9mm Makarov is designed for compact blowback pistols. The two are not interchangeable. Buy the cartridge marked on your pistol.
9mm vs 9x18 makarov: which is better?
Standard 9mm (9x19) has more energy and is cheaper, while 9x18 Makarov fits classic Makarov-style pistols. They use different case lengths and bullet diameters, so they cannot be swapped.
Can you shoot 9mm makarov in a 9mm luger pistol?
No. 9mm Makarov uses a different case length and bullet diameter, so it will not function safely in a 9mm Luger pistol. Use only the cartridge stamped on your barrel.
Is 9mm makarov good for self defense?
Yes, 9mm Makarov is adequate for close-range defense with a quality hollow point. Its power sits between .380 ACP and 9mm Luger.
