Choosing .223 Remington Ammunition
Remington introduced the .223 Remington in 1964 as a commercial version of the cartridge developed for the M16. It became one of the most popular centerfire rifle rounds in the U.S., known for flat trajectory and outstanding accuracy.
55 grain FMJ and soft points are the most common loads for training and varmints. Lighter 40 to 50 grain polymer-tipped bullets are the fastest choice for small varmints. Heavier 62 to 77 grain bullets resist wind better and are favored for precision shooting, but they need a faster barrel twist.
.223 Remington is safe to fire in rifles chambered for 5.56 NATO. The reverse is not recommended because 5.56 runs at higher pressure. For range days, buying .223 ammo in bulk keeps cost per round low, while premium soft points or ballistic tips are the right choice for hunting.
.223 for Varmints and Predators
.223 Remington is one of the most popular varmint and coyote cartridges in North America. Light polymer-tipped bullets such as Hornady V-MAX fragment quickly for clean kills and low ricochet risk, while 55 grain soft points are a good all-around choice for predators.
Bolt-action rifles in .223 are extremely accurate and affordable to shoot, making them excellent for new hunters and precision practice. Buying a bulk case of your favorite load keeps you supplied through varmint season.

Frequently Asked Questions
.223 remington vs 5.56 nato: which is better?
5.56 NATO is loaded hotter, while .223 Remington is milder and often more accurate. .223 is safe in a 5.56 chamber, but 5.56 in a .223-only chamber is not recommended. A .223 Wylde chamber handles both.
Is 223 remington for deer hunting?
.223 Remington can take deer where it is legal, using a controlled-expansion bullet of 60 grains or more and careful shot placement at moderate range. Some states do not allow it for deer, so check your local regulations.
223 wylde vs 223 remington: which is better?
.223 Wylde is a chamber design, not a different cartridge. A .223 Wylde rifle safely fires both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO with match-grade accuracy, which makes it a versatile choice.
222 remington vs 223: which is better?
.223 Remington is faster and far more popular, with much cheaper ammo. The .222 Remington is an older benchrest and varmint cartridge with a loyal following. They are not interchangeable.
