About .460 S&W Magnum Ammunition

Smith & Wesson introduced the .460 S&W Magnum in 2005 for its X-Frame revolvers. It is one of the fastest revolver cartridges ever made, driving .45 caliber bullets well over 2,000 feet per second with lighter loads.

Loads typically range from 200 to 300 grains. Lighter monolithic bullets such as the 200 grain Hornady FTX or MonoFlex give the flattest trajectory, while heavier 275 to 300 grain bullets penetrate deeply on elk, moose and bear.

The .460's biggest advantage is versatility. The same revolver fires .454 Casull and .45 Colt, so you can practice with mild .45 Colt and carry full-power .460 into the field. Expect stout recoil and plan your practice accordingly.

The Smith & Wesson Model 460 is the best-known revolver for this cartridge, and some single-shot and lever rifles are also chambered for it.
