About .50 AE Ammunition

The .50 Action Express was designed in 1988 by Evan Whildin of Action Arms for the Desert Eagle pistol. It uses a rebated rim so it can share a bolt face with the .44 Magnum version of the same gun, and it remains one of the most powerful semi-auto handgun cartridges.

Most .50 AE loads use 300 to 350 grain bullets. Jacketed hollow points like the Hornady XTP are the standard for hunting deer and hogs at close range, while FMJ is sometimes available for target shooting.

Recoil and muzzle blast are substantial, and the ammo is expensive, so many owners shoot .50 AE for the experience rather than high-volume training. Make sure your Desert Eagle is set up for .50 AE, since each caliber needs its own barrel and magazine.

Shooting the Desert Eagle

The Desert Eagle is gas-operated, so it needs full-power ammo to cycle and a firm grip to run reliably. Brass-cased jacketed bullets work best, and lead bullets are not recommended because they can foul the gas system.
