About 9x21 IMI Ammunition
Israel Military Industries developed the 9x21mm in the early 1980s. Countries such as Italy long banned civilian ownership of "military" calibers like 9x19mm, so manufacturers created a cartridge with a 21mm case and the same overall length, letting it fit standard 9mm-size pistols and magazines.
Typical loads use 123 to 124 grain FMJ bullets at velocities close to standard 9mm Luger. Because the bullet is seated deeper in a longer case, performance and recoil feel very similar to 9x19.
9x21 and 9x19 are not interchangeable, so always use ammo that matches the marking on your barrel. If you own a pistol in 9x21, a supply of quality FMJ is ideal for practice and competition.
Pistols chambered in 9x21 include versions of the Beretta 92, CZ 75 and Tanfoglio models sold in Europe. Many competition shooters in Italy built their skills on this cartridge.

Frequently Asked Questions
9x19 vs 9x21: which is better?
They perform almost the same, but 9x19 (9mm Luger) is far more common and cheaper. 9x21 was created mainly for countries that restricted civilian 9x19. The two are not interchangeable, so use the cartridge marked on your barrel.
Can I shoot 9mm luger in a 9x21 pistol?
No, you should not fire 9mm Luger in a 9x21 chamber. The shorter 9x19 case can headspace improperly and cause malfunctions or damage. Use only 9x21 ammo in a 9x21 pistol.
What is 9x21 ammo used for?
9x21 IMI is used mainly for pistol competition and by owners of pistols sold in countries that restrict 9x19mm. It offers 9mm Luger-class performance in standard-size frames.
Is 9x21 the same as 9mm IMI?
Yes, 9x21, 9x21mm IMI and 9mm IMI all refer to the same cartridge developed by Israel Military Industries.
