About .30-30 Winchester Ammunition
Winchester introduced the .30-30 in 1895 for the Model 1894 lever-action rifle, and it was one of the first smokeless powder sporting cartridges in America. Generations of hunters have relied on it, and it is still chambered in Marlin, Henry and Winchester lever guns today.
150 and 170 grain soft points are the standard deer loads. Because most lever-action rifles use tube magazines, traditional .30-30 bullets have flat or round noses to prevent a pointed tip from striking the primer of the round ahead. Polymer-tipped loads made specifically for tube magazines are a safe exception.
The .30-30 is at its best inside about 150 to 200 yards, where it hits hard with very manageable recoil. For deer season, buy a quality soft point and confirm your zero before opening day.
Rifles Chambered in .30-30
The Winchester Model 94, Marlin 336 and Henry lever-action rifles are the classic .30-30s, and single-shot rifles like the Thompson/Center Contender also use it. Their light weight and quick handling make them perfect for still-hunting and tree stands.
For deer, a 150 grain bullet shoots a bit flatter, while 170 grain bullets penetrate deeper on larger animals and black bear.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 30-30 good for deer hunting?
Yes, .30-30 Winchester is an excellent deer cartridge inside about 150 to 200 yards. A 150 or 170 grain soft point offers reliable expansion and penetration with light recoil.
30-30 vs 308: which is better?
.308 Winchester shoots flatter and carries more energy at distance, while .30-30 is ideal in lightweight lever-action rifles. Choose .30-30 for woods hunting, .308 for longer shots.
30-30 vs 30-06: which is better?
30-06 is far more powerful with much more range, while .30-30 has lighter recoil and suits lever actions. Choose 30-06 for elk and open country, .30-30 for deer in timber.
Can you use pointed bullets in a 30-30?
Not in a standard tube magazine, because a pointed tip can strike the primer of the round ahead. Use flat-nose or round-nose bullets, or polymer-tipped loads made for tube magazines.
