About .338 Lapua Magnum Ammunition
The .338 Lapua Magnum was developed in the late 1980s, with Finland's Lapua finalizing the design, to give snipers a rifle cartridge that could reach beyond 1,000 meters with more energy than .300 magnums. It has since earned a reputation as one of the finest long-range cartridges available.
Most loads use 250 to 300 grain bullets. Heavy 300 grain match bullets have very high ballistic coefficients, so they stay supersonic and resist wind at extreme range. Hunting loads use bonded or monolithic bullets designed for large game.
.338 Lapua ammo is expensive, and recoil is heavy without a muzzle brake. Most shooters buy it for precision work and pick one load to master. Confirm your rifle's twist rate and chamber before choosing bullets.
Rifles in .338 Lapua
Rifles chambered for .338 Lapua Magnum include the Accuracy International AXMC, Barrett MRAD and Savage 110 Elite Precision. Most use muzzle brakes to tame recoil.
