About .50 BMG Ammunition
John Browning developed the .50 Browning Machine Gun cartridge near the end of World War I, and it was adopted with the M2 heavy machine gun. Also known as 12.7x99mm NATO, it remains in military service and is popular with civilian shooters using semi-auto and bolt-action .50 caliber rifles.
Most .50 BMG loads use 650 to 750 grain bullets. FMJ is the standard choice for target shooting, while heavier match bullets offer the best accuracy at extreme distances.
.50 BMG is powerful and expensive, so most shooters buy it in small quantities for long-range sessions. Some states restrict .50 caliber rifles, so check your local laws before buying.
Civilian rifles in .50 BMG include the Barrett M82 and M99, and various single-shot and bolt-action designs used for extreme long-range target shooting.
